It was therefore obvious for the Munich car manufacturer to continue this success story with the successor E36. The new class 1 regulations of the DTM from 1993 seemed to offer every opportunity to do so, but it quickly became apparent that the long straight-six engine made the new race car too top-heavy. The engine would have had to be moved further back in the chassis. But the rule-makers said no. This seemed to be the early end of BMW’s new 3-series in DTM, as they subsequently withdrew from the popular racing series. It is only thanks to the enthusiasm of German team boss Luggi Linder that a technically exceptional race car was born that deserves its special place in touring car history. Based on the BMW E36 325i Coupé, Linder had a class 1 chassis developed at Thompson TCP in England, fitted with a Formula 1-level pushrod rear axle. The engine was based on the four-cylinder of the former BMW M3 E30 Sport Evo, which, however, had reached its limit at 390 hp. The fact that this technological jewel was not successful at the time does not dampen the fascination for this outstanding racing car until today.

After the end of the extremely successful BMW M3 E30, a pure Class 1 DTM car based on the new BMW M3 generation E36 was developed in Munich after 1992. However, the long straight six-cylinder engine caused numerous problems with the weight distribution and so BMW tried to get the regulations changed in advance so that the engine could be placed further back in the chassis. When this was rejected by the rule-makers, the Munich company surprisingly withdrew from the DTM and the development of the new E36 racing car seemed to be history. Was the huge effort really completely in vain? Team boss Udo Wagenhäuser had other plans for 1994: his good contacts to BMW allowed him to draw on a lot of the factory's technical data, and it is rumoured that essential technical modules of this ambitious private project were supplied by BMW. With DHL a big sponsorship had been acquired, but the brand-new car did not get off the ground as quickly as expected. After only four races, Georg Severich took over the cockpit from Rüdiger Schmitt and brought additional sponsorship for the Norisring and the rest of the season.

Raceland Gold Edition made by Spark. Exclusive model. Early in November of 2023 Erich Zakowski passed away just a few days before his 90th birthday. The success story that the man from Niederzissen wrote is probably unique in German motorsport. From the first tuned Ford Escort racing version in 1968 to his own Formula 1 car in 1985, there were racing cars that characterised their time. The 2-litre Zakspeed Ford Escort had dominated the 1976 DRM season, but lost out to the BMW 320 in 1977. By the start of the 1978 season at the latest, it was clear that a turbo was also needed in the small Division 2 to be among the front runners. But Zakspeed’s new Gr. 5 Turbo Capri appeared only late in the season. As BMW’s new superfast 1.5-litre turbocharged engines were blowing in rows after just a few laps at the beginning of the year, the old naturally aspirated engines were busy collecting points. Armin Hahne regularly finished fourth in the now outdated Mampe Ford Escort and even came second in the third-to-last race in Zolder ahead of Hans Heyer in the new Turbo Capri. As a reward, Zakspeed also installed a 1.5-litre turbo in the Escort for the Norisring city circuit. Hahne thanked them with second place behind the eventual champion Harald Ertl in the BMW 320 Turbo. With this final turbo boost, the Ford Escort was retired as a works car.

The small village of Weidensees in the beautiful landscape north of Nuremberg could easily pass as the famous Gallic village in the history of the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. Richard Leinberger had founded a small Fiat car dealership there in 1963 and, as a rally and racing driver himself, raced everything the Italian brand had to offer. He had more than 150 class and overall victories to his name when he specialised in tuning Fiat vehicles together with engineer Dietmar Breit in 1973. In-house chassis and fuel-injected engines quickly made the small company famous among sports and racing drivers. Dallara had transformed the Fiat X1/9 built by Bertone into a spectacular Group 5 version in 1975. Leinberger Tuning refined the engine and chassis on this basis and built its own GRP body components with modified air intakes for use on the racetrack. The small 1.6 litre engine produced a whopping 230 hp at almost 10,000 rpm. Nevertheless, it was a courageous decision to compete against the superior 2-litre BMW and Ford in the German Group 5 Championship in 1977. The little Italian was one of the most beautiful Group 5 cars of all time, but the petite engine had to push its limits too often, causing the X1/9 to retire from the race.

Nicknamed Mister Porsche Wuppertal privateer Edgar Dören had been a fixture in the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft since 1971 and remained true to Porsche for decades. With the support of the tool brands Weralit and Elora a dream came true for him in 1980 when he acquired a Porsche 935 K3 to race the German DRM championship and several rounds of the World Championship for Makes that year. Two podium finishes at the Mainz-Finthen and Zolder DRM rounds were the highlights for the colourful Weralit car in 1980. Between 1980 and 1982 this Porsche 935 K3 chassis #009 0003 was a regular starter in national and international events with Edgar Dören and e.g. team mate Jürgen Lässig and also raced the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1981. In a late career #009 was used by John Greasley to mix up the 1993 British GT Championship. Dören continued endurance racing with Porsche in VLN at the Nürburgring Nordschleife for 22 years and won the Nürburgring 24 Hours of 1988. He died in 2004 just a few days ahead of another season.

Raceland Gold Edition made by Spark. Exclusive model. The BMW 3.0 CSL's touring car career had reached its crowning glory with the 1979 European Touring Car Championship title. Now that homologation had expired and BMW was looking for an inexpensive successor before Group A revolutionised touring car racing in 1982. BMW Motorsport commissioned Heribert Werginz to develop and homologate the BMW 635 CSi after Group 2 regulations. BMW delivered two body shells to Austria and the RCV Racing Corporation Vienna team built up the two race cars. The RCV team boss took the wheel himself in the 1980 ETCC and also brought a sponsor into the cockpit in the form of Austrian timber merchant Harald Neger. Contracting Umberto Grano for the #1 car brought additional support from BMW Italia and with German video and HiFi giant Grundig, an unfamiliar name was brought into motorsport as well. Before the seventh ETCC round at the Nürburgring, three victories were offset by three retirements. The new car was fast but not yet reliable and so the murderous Green Hell Nordschleife also took its toll on the heavy coupé: retirement with a broken rear axle. The green BMW won again at Silverstone, but at the end of the 1980 season, the 635 CSi fell short of the hoped-for European Championship title. Umberto Grano made up for this one year later, then under the BMW Eggenberger flag.

with Niki Lauda figure leaning on the car. Hardly anyone thought that Niki Lauda would win another world championship title with McLaren in 1984, but the then 35-year-old Austrian beat his team-mate Alain Prost by half a world championship point at the end of the season. This was the high point of his F1 career, as 1985 was a disaster with an unbelievable 12 retirements in 15 races. Lauda bid farewell to Formula 1 with a final victory in Zandvoort, but the man with the world-famous Parmalat cap remained a sought-after technical and strategic advisor and was, of course, also an advertising icon whose popularity every car manufacturer wanted to capitalise on. In 1987, BMW engaged the Austrian for the launch of the new M3 E30 touring car programme. The BMW M3 was to become the most successful touring car of all time and, as there was a World Touring Car Championship for the first time in 1987 in addition to the ETCC, the Munich company spared no expense or effort to make the new Group A racing car a success right from the start. Niki Lauda was already on site at the tests before the first world championship round at Monza in March 1987 and served as coach to e.g. Roland Ratzenberger and Emanuele Pirro at Schnitzer. It was an unusual sight to see the Austrian in a BMW M-Team outfit in the pits. But, of course, the Parmalat cap was not to be missed here either. Roberto Ravaglia won the world championship title for BMW. The Lauda mission was accomplished.
