A sensational start<?xml:namespace prefix="o" />  It seems somewhat anachronistic that, on the one hand, the Haas Formula 1 Team uses Ferrari 067/6 V6 engines, whilst at the same time cooperating closely with Toyota Gazoo Racing as a technical partner. The GR logo of Gazoo Racing features prominently on the cars, and in 2026, TGR from Toyota will even lend its name to the TGR Haas F1 Team. It was already evident in 2025 that the collaboration in simulator development and the exchange of engineers – spearheaded by team principal Ayao Komatsu since 2024 – was beginning to bear fruit, as Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman regularly finished in the points during the second half of the season.  Following an impressive 7th place at the 2026 season opener in Australia, Oliver Bearman caused a real sensation in the Haas VF-26 at the second Grand Prix in China. Behind the two dominant Mercedes and the two fast Ferraris, the 21-year-old Briton crossed the finish line in Shanghai in a sensational fifth place. For 20 laps, he had Max Verstappen hot on his heels and kept his nerve, holding off the former champion until Verstappen retired on lap 44. After China, the competition caught up strongly and Oliver Bearman has only managed to finish in the points once since then. The sensational early season was, in any case, a huge motivational boost for the TGR Haas team.

Japanese tradition<?xml:namespace prefix="o" />  Whether it is the cherry blossom festival or the famous tea ceremonies – Japan is still shaped today by traditions dating back thousands of years. And despite its chequered history, the Suzuka 1,000 km has also been preserved as a traditional event. Since 1966, this classic endurance race has been contested by a wide variety of cars: from the Japanese Super GT and the FIA GT to Group C cars in the All Japanese Sports Car Championship. And it was during this era in particular that Porsche consistently enjoyed success. So it was only natural to choose three legendary Porsche liveries for the 911 GT3 R cars competing in the IGTC’s return to Suzuka in 2025.  The pink pig was a tribute to Porsche’s 917/20 of Le Mans 1971, the pink-and-white Italiya 911 GT3 to the Kremer-Porsche K3 – which became the first European team to win at Suzuka in 1981 – and finally the #7, driven by works drivers Kevin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor and Patrick Pilet, was adorned in the retro livery of the New Man Porsche 956, the Le Mans winner of 1984 and 1985. Their appearance received huge media coverage, and the yellow 911 – fielded by Absolute Racing – came within a hair’s breadth of securing victory. At the end of the race, it was just 13 seconds behind the winning BMW M4 GT3 of WRT. By then, however, the Japanese fans had long since taken Porsche’s retro cars to their hearts.

Survivor & Champion The 1968 Grand Prix season marked a major turning point in many respects: technical development exploded, expensive titanium and magnesium made their debut, and the door to the world of aerodynamics was thrown wide open – a Pandora’s box, as it turned out. Formula 1 became immensely more expensive, and major sponsors replaced the small stickers of the tyre and oil companies. The Cosworth V8 was no longer exclusively available to Lotus, but the greater loss for Colin Chapman was the death of Jim Clark in a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim, even before the European F1 season had started. This made the then 39-year-old Graham Hill the spearhead of the new Gold Leaf Team Lotus for 1968. The 1968 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring is still regarded today as the Formula 1 race with the worst weather conditions. Continuous rain and thick fog suggested the race should be abandoned, yet the officials sent the drivers into the Green Hell anyway. Jackie Stewart’s victory, with a lead of over four minutes, remains the stuff of legend to this day. Graham Hill had to settle for second place, but took the lead in the World Championship. With a victory at the season finale in Mexico, the Briton was crowned Formula 1 World Champion for the second time after 1962, in a season in which mere survival was a success. With Jim Clark, Mike Spence, Ludovico Scarfiotti and Jo Schlesser, F1 had lost four big names in just one year.

Turbos on a diet The entire Formula 1 field lined up in 1986 with 1.5-litre turbo engines, but the reduction in fuel consumption to 195 litres per Grand Prix was causing headaches for the engineers and electronics specialists. At full power, the cars were at risk of running out of fuel and breaking down before the race was even over. This prediction proved accurate – particularly on the high-speed circuit at Hockenheim. Tyrrell had secured the fast Renault EF15 Turbo V6 engines, which were retrofitted with pneumatic valve control during the course of the year. A supply of nitrogen compressed to up to 2,600 psi now actuated the valves, thereby replacing the inertia of the former valve springs. In Data General, Ken Tyrrell had found an up-and-coming American computer company that financed the expensive turbo engines. This also allowed him to circumvent the ban on tobacco advertising, which had already been in force at the 1986 German Grand Prix, amongst other events. Martin Brundle had qualified the Tyrrell 015 in 15th place and had already moved up to 9th before the tyre changes. However, on lap 25, a faulty electronics box sparked a fire in the engine, leading to his retirement. The real drama, however, unfolded at the very front of the field: whilst running in second and third places, the two McLarens driven by Prost and Rosberg ran out of fuel just a few metres from the finish line.

Embarrassing home race ATS founder Günter Schmid had commissioned the development of his first Formula 1 car from the remnants of the Penske and March F1 teams. However, Robin Herd’s HS1 was, in 1978, miles away from the modern wing cars at the front of the field. To make matters worse, Goodyear had stopped supplying the backmarkers with qualifying tyres, making it impossible to finish in the top 12 in qualifying. For ATS, the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim was to offer no home advantage anyway: in qualifying, Jean-Pierre Jarier had once again spun off the track in the ATS due to a stuck accelerator pedal. The Frenchman had enough now and left the team that very Saturday evening. Jochen Mass did qualify for the race on the hard Goodyears, but started from the penultimate row, with only Ertl and Stuck behind him. Whilst the last cars were still rolling into their starting positions, the race had already been given the green light at the front. A chaotic start to the race. The two idols of the German fans, Mass and Stuck, returned from the first lap in only 20th and 21st position and were absent from the second lap altogether: in the fast Ostkurve of all places, the ATS and the Shadow of the two Germans made contact, and the race ended in the crash barriers for both of them. An embarrassing home race for ATS and a disappointment for the many fans.
