The retrofitted revolution
When the six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 made its debut at the first European Grand Prix in Spain in 1976, it caused a sensation. Derek Gardner’s idea of fitting four small, steerable front wheels to a Formula 1 car was nothing short of a revolution. Whilst team-mate Jody Scheckter was still driving the old Tyrrell 007, Patrick Depailler sensationally qualified the new car in third place on the grid at its debut in Jarama. From Zolder onwards, two P34s lined up on the starting grid, but the new design also caused the drivers some trouble: they could not see the small front wheels when turning in. Tyrrell therefore fitted small windows into the cockpit below the mirrors. This problem was solved.
However, the revolutionary six-wheel Tyrrell’s aerodynamic advantages came at the cost of drawbacks such as the added weight of the complex front-axle design and difficulties in developing specialised tyres with Goodyear. Although Jody Scheckter won in Sweden, the car remained problematic. When cooling problems arose, Derek Gardner had to fit an additional radiator at the front of Scheckter’s car at Zandvoort. The brand-new design had to be retrofitted with old-fashioned solutions, resulting in a rather odd appearance. Still, Jody Scheckter finished fifth at the Dutch GP and at the end of the year the South African came third in the 1976 World Championship.
