Following the Le Mans victories in 1970 and 1971, the 5-litre engines were banned from the World Championship and Porsche withdrew to the USA to dominate the Can-Am series with its 917 evolutions. However, with an eye on the new Group 5 regulations from 1975 onwards, the Germans soon began building its first prototypes based on the 911 Carrera RS 2.7, culminating in the Carrera RSR Turbo 2.1 in 1974. The final chassis numbers, R12 and R13, competed at Le Mans in 1974. GRP, aluminium and titanium components had reduced the weight to 750 kg. The 2.1-litre turbo delivered up to 500 hp, making the cars a formidable weapon against the sports car prototypes from Matra, Ligier and Mirage.
Starting from 7th and 11th on the grid respectively, the two RSRs took to the track in 1974 and made a powerful impression – and not just visually. To this day, these two Martini Turbos, with their extremely wide rear axle, rank among the absolute icons of the 911 history. Swiss Herbert Müller and Gijs van Lennep drove the #22 chassis R13 to a sensational second place. Manfred Schurti and the Austrian Helmuth Koinigg were unfortunately forced to retire the #21 chassis R12 after eight hours following an engine fire. However, the test campaign based on the 911 was a success and was continued in subsequent years with the 934 and 935, culminating in the 935 K3’s overall victory at Le Mans in 1979.
