Porsche 944 LM Porsche System TeKaDe 200 Meilen von Nürnberg Norisring 1981

Raceland Gold Edition made by Spark. Exclusive model. Before the introduction of the successful Group C era, the French ACO tried to guarantee a colourful but at least full grid for the Le Mans 24 Hours of 1981 with the introduction of new categories. In addition to their 936/81, Porsche entered a 924 Carrera GTR in the IMSA GTO and a Porsche 944 LM in the GTP class. The latter was shared by works driver Jürgen Barth with reigning World Rally Champion and Le Mans newcomer Walter Röhrl. Overall 7th and winner of the GTP was a success for the 2.5-litre turbo 944 alongside Porsche's overall victory, but the car did not fit into any other racing series in Europe and the focus was already on the Porsche 956 anyway, so was Le Mans 1981 a one-off appearance? The 944 LM was not eligible to compete in the German Rennsport Meisterschaft, but the traditional money race at the Norisring offered the opportunity to show the car to a large audience once again with rally icon Walter Röhrl before it ended its short racing career. The reigning 1980 World Rally Champion was actually supposed to compete for Mercedes in the 1981 World Rally Championship, but the Stuttgart-based company pulled the plug at short notice. Röhrl suddenly had more time than he liked for racing on circuits. At Nuremberg he had no chance against the Group 5 horsepower monsters, but the Norisring 200 Miles were a nice final exhibition run for Porsche’s short-lived GTP project.
