McLaren MCL39 Mercedes F1 3° Abu Dhabi GP World Champion 2025
A close result
The 2025 Formula 1 season was the most successful of Lando Norris’s career so far. Following his season-opening victory in Australia, a close title battle initially evolved with his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri and the reigning world champion Max Verstappen. However, he particularly impressed during the summer with victories in Monaco, Austria, Great Britain and Hungary. A technical failure at Zandvoort temporarily set him back, but the Briton fought his way back to the top of the drivers’ standings with strong performances. The title was finally decided at the last Grand Prix of the year in Abu Dhabi. Norris went into the race as championship leader on 408 points, ahead of Verstappen on 396 and Piastri on 392 points. For Norris, the situation was clear: a third-place finish would be enough to secure the title, regardless of Verstappen’s result.
Whilst Verstappen was battling for victory at the front, the McLaren driver’s main priority was to secure third place. The pressure was immense. Even the slightest mistake could have put his World Championship hopes at risk once again. After 58 thrilling laps at the Yas Marina Circuit, Verstappen finally won ahead of Piastri, whilst Norris secured exactly the third place he needed. He thus finished the season on 423 points – just two points ahead of Verstappen. After 24 races, seven victories and a breathtaking season finale, it was done: Lando Norris became Formula 1 World Champion for the first time in 2025, joining an illustrious line-up of McLaren legends such as James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Mika Häkkinen, who had also won the title with the legendary British team.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" />
