Alongside the 1968 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, the 1976 World Championship final at Fuji is regarded as the Grand Prix that should never have gone ahead due to the catastrophic weather. Monsoon-like rain had completely flooded the track, and the majority of the drivers refused to line up on the grid. Aquaplaning, fog and the spray generated by the wide tyres made a race life-threatening for the drivers. Yet the officials remained unyielding, as this was to be the first time a World Championship final would be broadcast live on television. After lengthy discussions and delays, irresponsible officials actually sent the field out onto the track on that 24 October 1976.
The situation was clear: Niki Lauda, still seriously injured, led the World Championship in his Ferrari with a three-point lead over James Hunt in his McLaren. But the extreme weather conditions at Mount Fuji turned the race into a pure lottery for the World Championship – or indeed a battle for life and death. Starting from second on the grid, the McLaren returned from the first lap in the lead. Lauda dropped far back and, to the horror of the Ferrari team, retired the Ferrari in the pits on the second lap. He had only narrowly escaped death a few months earlier. After several slips, James Hunt crossed the finish line in third place. A single point was enough for him to win the 1976 World Championship.
