The 1955 Le Mans disaster had changed European motor racing overnight. Mercedes-Benz had withdrawn from racing, and countries such as Switzerland had banned circuit racing altogether. Although Mike Hawthorn was listed as the 1955 winner in his Jaguar D-Type, his pit entry manoeuvre had also caused an accident that claimed the lives of 84 people and highlighted that the French circuit was no longer up to the task of handling such fast cars. Work on a completely new pitlane, speed-reducing chicanes approaching the pits and track widening took 13 months before the traditional race was started in July 1956, though this time without World Championship status.
Ron Flockhart had joined Ecurie Ecosse for the 1956 season and lined up alongside his compatriot Ninian Sanderson in the privateer Jaguar D-Type. Two Scots in a Scottish team, proudly displaying their national colours of blue and white on the British car. Whether it was down to the pouring rain, the numerous accidents or the fact that the competitors from Aston Martin and Ferrari were fielding cars with only 2.5-litre engines is impossible to say 70 years on. In the history books, anyway, the success of David Murray’s private team occupies a special place, surpassed only by the Scottish one-two victory with the D-Type the following year.
