Ford RS200 Ford Motor Co. Ltd. 3° Rallye Sweden 1986
Too late to succeed
Following its major rally successes with the Escort, Ford was urgently seeking a successor for the World Rally Championship from 1983. However, the Group B competition from Lancia, Audi and Peugeot had by then set the bar very high, and the advent of four-wheel drive technology now required a significantly greater investment. None other than former Formula 1 designer Tony Southgate designed a prototype featuring what was perhaps the finest Group B rally chassis ever. However, the RS200 turned out to be a little too heavy and, with its 450 hp, was also outclassed by the competition in terms of power. To make matters worse, WRC homologation was delayed until February 1986.
As a result, the new mid-engined Ford missed its eagerly awaited debut at the Monte Carlo Rally. It was not until the 1986 Swedish Rally that Kalle Grundel and Benny Melander took to the start line for the first time in the new works car, setting three fastest special stage times in the snow of their home rally and engaging in a close battle with Juha Kankkunen’s Peugeot and Markku Alén’s Lancia. Third place on its debut was promising, but it remained the RS200’s best result in the World Championship, as the end of the brutal Group B cars was drawing near following Henri Toivonen’s fatal accident. The 600 hp evolution car planned for 1987 was never fielded in the WRC.
