ATS D7 BMW Turbo F1 Marilena German GP 1984

Raceland Gold Edition made by Spark. Exclusive model. Manfred Winkelhock had a successful association with BMW both in touring cars and Formula 2 and was fast in Group C cars as well. Still the entry into Formula 1 in 1982 was the fulfilment of a life’s dream. From 1983 Austrian Gustav Brunner was responsible for the design of the ATS F1 cars and from that year the German team had the mighty four cylinder turbo charged BMW engine available. Racing the ATS D7 BMW in 1984 was the third season for Winkelhock and German team principal Günter Schmid. The young German was used to racing an inferior car at the limit but the lack of reliability in combination with the team’s unrest prevented any notable success. The first half of the season before the German Grand Prix early in August had seen eight retirements apart from the two 8th position finishes for the Swabian in Montreal and Dallas. For the long straights through the Hockenheim forest the BMW turbo engine was the right weapon worth a 13th position in qualifying. In front of his home crowd Manfred Winkelhock was on his way to a top ten result when on lap 31 the gearbox broke and he had to climb out of the ATS prematurely again. Another symbolic exit in the marriage between Winkelhock and ATS captured in our exclusive model with a special figure in memory of the unforgotten German talent.
