Nick Wirth’s company Simtek – the short version of Simulation Technology – had worked for numerous Formula 1 teams since the early 1990s before they embarked on the adventure of joining Formula 1 with a team of their own. Simtek caused early negative headlines when Roland Ratzenberger was killed in the S941 at Imola in only the third round of 1994. By the end of that year several investors withdrew their money, among them Australian David Brabham. It soon became obvious that 1995 would be a very difficult year for the British team. Domenico Schiattarella was contracted for the first half of the 1995 season next to Jos Verstappen.
The Simtek S951 and its new 3-litre Ford Cosworth V8 engine were certainly not the worst combination on the 1995 grid but the Banbury team had accumulated large debts already in spring and was in trouble to keep two cars running. Technical retirements of both Simtek S951 were rather the rule than the exception. With the last reserves Nick Wirth travelled to Monaco late in May. Jos Verstappen could not get away at the start after a gearbox problem and Mimmo Schiattarella retired after a collision on the first lap. After this weekend an official receiver took over. The dream was over for another technically ambitious but underfunded F1 team.
