Project 1 has been synonymous with successful Porsche customer entries in GT racing for 25 years. Certainly one reason for P.J. Hyett and his AO Racing Team to team up with the experienced Porsche squad for the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans. At the 100th anniversary of the endurance classic, the GTE version of the 911 was on the grid for the last time before the GT3 cars will take over for 2024. To bid farewell to the Porsche 991 RSR 19, AO also brought along the Rexy livery that is so popular in the IMSA series. Incidentally, the cheekily grinning Tyrannosaurus Rex was the idea of P.J. Hyett's children.
At Le Mans as well, the green prehistoric beast with its big feet, short arms and bared teeth quickly became a crowd favourite. Starting driver Matteo Cairoli also showed his teeth when he drove the 911 from 15th place on the grid to the top of the GTE class in just 12 laps. Matteo Cairoli, P.J. Hyett and Gunnar Jeannette led the class for almost half of the race and they were still battling for a podium finish 50 minutes before the end when a suspension damage forced the Rexy into the pits. Three laps lost due to the late repair meant a disappointing 7th position in the GTE Am class in the end.
